Tisza River Basin Sustainable Development Program (TRB SDP)

Members and organization

The Regional Environment Center (REC) and UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (RBEC),  proposed in 2001 the development of an regional Integrated Sustainable Development Program for the Tisa/Tisza River Basin, encompassing all countries bordering the river basin: Serbia and Montenegro, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine.

For the moment, the TRB SDP is supported by the British Embassy in Budapest, the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe in Bratislava as well as the Carpathian Foundation. The program is implemented by the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe and the Tisza-Szamos Kht.

Aims and objectives

  • Identification of stakeholders and development of a participatory framework for cooperation between countries, sectors, communities and stakeholders in the river basin

  • Help the capacity building of local and regional initiatives

  • Secure prosperity for the people living in the river basin

  • Ensure sustainable use of natural resources

  • Minimize environmental risks

  • Preserve natural and cultural values
