Country Info

Croatia

Croatia, an upper middle-income country and a full-fledged market economy, gained independence in 1991 and attained candidate status for European Union (EU) membership in June 2004. On March 17, 2005, Croatia received EU approval for its Accession Negotiating Framework. Following that, the country began accession talks in October 2005 and hopes to join the EU around the year 2009. Its main development objective is to reach 75 percent of the EU's average per capita income by 2013. Currently, gross national income per capita of $8,060 (GNI, Atlas method) stands at around 50 percent in purchasing parity terms.
