Title: |
Danube obstacle
removal |
|
Objective: |
The three key
Danube bridges destroyed in Novi Sad (Province of Vojvodina)
in Spring 1999 were the 600m, 2x3 lane Sloboda road bridge,
the 345m 2x2 lane Varadin road bridge, and the 467m, Zezeljev
road-rail bridge. Traffic down the Danube is blocked by
debris, possibly unexploded ordnance, and a temporary pontoon
bridge installed to link the two parts of Novi Sad on either
side of the river. The objective is to reopen the Danube for
international and local navigation traffic, and restore access
and essential utilities. |
|
Description: |
(i) River clearance of the Danube,
including removal of debris and unexploded ordnance
(ii) Reconstruction of a bridge for road, rail and pedestrian
traffic with sufficient pillar height to replace the pontoon
bridge |
|
Preparation Status: |
Initial
investigations by the Danube Commission, Budapest |
|
Economic/Financial Justification: |
There is a strong
interest by East and West European shipping companies to
restore normal river traffic on the Danube, which carried some
50 million tonnes of cargo in 1996. The financial situation of
many shippers is badly affected by the interruption,
especially in Romania and Bulgaria, but also in Austria and
Germany.
The restoration of water supply links to the old part of Novi
Sad and the Petrovaradin historical fortress site would have
direct humanitarian benefits for the population. |

Cost: |
