In the context of
the Romanian government’s policy of implementing a motorway
network programme on the most heavily traveled routes, the
partially existing motorway-standard road between Bucharest
and Constanta on the Pan-European Corridor IV is to be
upgraded |

(i) Completion of construction of
a 2x2 lane motorway Bucharest-Lehlui, 54 km
(ii) Completion of construction of a 1x2 lane motorway
Lehliu-Fetesti, 79 km
(iii) Rehabilitation of an existing 2x2 lane motorway section
Fetesti-Cernavoda, 17 km |

Preparation Status/Timing: |
Consultants for
preparation of tender documents being appointed, tender launch
planned for June 2000, start of works on section
Fundulea-Lehiu planned for end 2000. |

Economic/Financial Justification: |
The expected AADT
on the new motorway is put at 12500 veh/day for 2010. The
economic rate of return is in the range of 8% to 12%,
depending on whether or not tolls are levied. |
