Title: |
Rijeka water
sewerage |
|
Objective: |
Rijeka, as a city
of several hundred thousand inhabitants with sizeable
industries and a large hydrocarbon port, generates wastewater
flows generally discharged into the Adriatic Sea. The vicinity
of tourism beach areas makes the proper discharge and
treatment of these flows an important requirement. |
|
Description: |
Upgrading of Rijeka’s sewerage
collection and treatment facilities to bring the city into
line with EU environmental standards. |
|
Preparation Status/Timing: |
EBRD loan signed
in December 1999, start of works planned for 2000. |
|
Economic/Financial Justification: |
Water pollution is
severe in many areas of Croatia, and has a negative effect on
ecology, public health and tourism. The Dalmatian coast is a
priority area for action since it is the centre of tourism
which is of major economic importance to the country,
generating some 85% of Croatia’s foreign exchange earnings. |

Major Sector/Project Issues: |
As is frequently the case in this
area, the water utility and corresponding city department is
in need of strengthening, particularly as regards financial
management and cost recovery. Such measures are essential to
ensure the sustainability of coastal pollution control.
Specific targets in physical and financial terms will be set
and their achievement monitored. |
